7 Daily Steps for a Healthier Lifestyle

Are you looking to better your health? If so, first know that a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about eating fruits and vegetables. There’s much more to it and that can make this lifestyle choice a bit daunting. But have no fear. The key is to change 1 day at a time.

Understand that some days you will want to return to your old habits. And that’s fine. There’s no pressure. Don’t get angry or discouraged. Instead, remember your goal and return to changing unhealthy habits into healthier ones, one step at a time. By the end of the year, you’ll be surprised how much you have changed. Here are 7 steps you can practice daily to create a healthier lifestyle.

1.  EAT 3 FULL MEALS AND 2 SNACKS DAILY. THE MORE NATURAL, THE BETTER.

  • Vegetables – Broccoli, Kale, Spinach, Carrots, Swiss chard, Yams, Beets, Mushrooms, Eggplant, Sweet Potatoes
  • Fruits – Avocados, Apples, Grapefruits, Papaya, Grapes, Watermelon, Strawberries, Blueberries, Cantaloupe
  • Dairy – Eggs, Low-fat Cheese, Milk 2%, Yogurt
  • Meats – Lean Beef, Chicken, Lamb, Turkey
  • Nuts, Seeds and Oils – Almonds, Cashews, Flaxseeds, Olive oil extra virgin, Canola oil, Peanuts, Sunflower seeds
  • Grains – Barley, Brown rice, Corn, Oats, Quinoa, Spelt, Whole wheat
  • Seafood – Cod, Halibut, Salmon, Sardines, Tuna
  • Beans and Legumes – Black beans, Dried peas, Kidney beans, Lentils, Lima beans, Navy beans, Pinto beans, Tofu
  • Spices and Herbs – Cayenne pepper, Cilantro, Cinnamon, Cloves, Ginger, Parsley, Peppermint, Thyme, Turmeric
  • Natural Sweeteners – Blackstrap molasses, Honey, Maple syrup
  • Other – Green tea, Water, Sea salt

2.  EXERCISE 3 – 4 TIMES A WEEK FOR 30 MINUTES MINIMUM

  • There are a ton of exercise optionss to choose from. Some examples are walking, dancing, running, swimming, hiking, biking, jogging, rowing, weight training, skiing, jumping rope, bicycling, zumba, yoga, tennis, pilates, tai chi, aerobics
  • Create an exercise regimen that offers both cardio fitness and muscle stretching. Exercises that focus on cardio like jogging will help you lose weight and build muscle. Exercises that focus on muscle stretching like yoga will help you lose weight, build muscle as well as improve flexibility, posture and balance.

3.  LIMIT ALCOHOL INTAKE

  • If you are a heavy drinker, limit alcoholic beverages to 1 glass of wine or 1 bottle of beer a day.
  • If you are a light drinker, try not to drink alcohol daily.

4.  LIMIT TOBACCO USE

  • Decrease to 3 cigarettes a day if you are a heavy smoker.
  • Decrease your tobacco use to none if you are a light smoker.

5.  MAINTAIN A HEALTHY SEXUAL LIFE

  • Practice safe and pleasurable sex 1-2 times a week minimum.
  • Be monogamous if possible.
  • Be respectful and have a consensual approach.

6.  GET SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF SLEEP

  • Sleep 7-9 hours daily.
  • Go to bed at the same time and rise at the same time
  • Avoid large meals before bedtime

7.  BEST OF ALL: LAUGH! LAUGH! LAUGH!
